The Book DJ, a TANGIBLE BAR® tangible user interface (TUI) application for our client MVB, enabled us to show the hidden beauty of databases.
At the 2017 Frankfurt Book Fair, MVB, the leading service provider for the German book industry, wanted to show a large audience what innovative technology can do for the book trade. MVB supports purchasing based on meta data integrated into their VLB database (German books in print database). This data helps to pick and choose the right book for every occasion.
NMY was tasked to create an exemplary application that visualizes dedicated meta data out of the VLB database. Visitors to the MVB booth and the media were supposed to discover the interactive application with their eyes as well as their hands. To achieve that, we relied on our TANGIBLE BAR®, an interactive touch table that uses physical objects (“tangibles”) to experience content more consciously.
For the Book Fair, our TANGIBLE BAR® became a book DJ. The user rotates the tangibles on the TANGIBLE BAR®. With the tangibles, users select items from the book categories color, region, and genre. Once the user has decided on their selection, the book DJ recommends a personal list of books that matches their requirements.
The minimalist user interface simultaneously helps users to dive into the world of books. The application has a clear and defined structure while being incredibly easy to use.
The Book DJ (in Germany also present on social media via #BücherDJ) was a crowd pleaser at the Frankfurt Book Fair. In general, the application received a lot of attention from the press and audience, which is exactly what it was made for!
The NMY team has created an intuitive application in a very short period of time. The Book DJ has exceeded our expectations. Visitors and the press at the Frankfurt Book Fair were at least as impressed as we were. The application was self-explanatory and it invited everyone to browse through the books – you can tell people had a lot of fun. We highly recommend NMY and their TANGIBLE BAR®.- Renate Marquardt, Head of Corporate Communications, MVB
