The Günter Grass-Haus, a museum dedicated to one of the most famous German writers and artists, hired NMY to create a concept and develop a virtual reality e-learning app for Grass’ most famous work ”Die Blechtrommel” (The Tin Drum).

”The Tin Drum” was published 60 years ago. Grass-Haus was looking to share a new insight into the novel with a broad audience while simultaneously raising awareness for a classic work of literature. Visitors of the museum are now able to learn about ”The Tin Drum” while diving into a classic literary work through a new channel.

VR LEARNING WITH GAMIFICATION

NMY and the Grass-Haus developed a concept including a user journey that deals with the main theme of the novel: coping with historical events and finding out how the hero’s memories are created. For this app, we drew from our experience with virtual reality education apps, because they offer a degree of immersion that supports the learning process. The implementation of gamification elements further supports this.

”Inside Blechtrommel - ein Literaturerlebnis“ is a virtual reality app that can be experienced by adults and children alike. Visitors of the Grass-Haus museum discover events in the life of Oskar Matzerath, the hero of the novel, and have to accomplish several tasks to discover what is behind the mystery of the ”Inside Blechtrommel” app. In the virtual world of the novel, users have to solve tasks like blowing out candles, shattering glass with their voices, and they also have to become drummers themselves.

BETTER LEARNING THROUGH VIRTUAL REALITY

Gamification offers a new way of dealing with literature. From now on, visitors of the Grass-Haus in Lübeck can dive into a famous German post-war novel and discover the ”Tin Drum” in real-time 3D. The novel can be experienced and interpreted in completely new ways. Thus our ”Inside Blechtrommel” app contributes to the literary discourse of the future and enhances innovative art reception. The project was funded by the German government (Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien). NMY also invested in the development of the app to improve education and the museum experience.
